Protect Your Child! (Or How to Keep Your Child Safe this July 4th)
June 2nd 2010 17:41
This past Memorial Day, the sand was perfect, the water the right temperature, and the grill was ready for the food. The only problem…my children were burnt, sun burnt, to a crisp because I forgot to protect my most valuable possession, my children. The aches and pains will go away, but the “anger” they have toward dear old dad will last for some time. I tell you, I will not have a repeat on the 4th of July as I did this Memorial Day. I have some tips to give you so your little guys and girls can have an enjoyable time and not get hurt.
Step one: SUNSCREEN! Protecting your child starts with the danger the little ones can’t see. Remember ultra violet rays attack even when the clouds are out. Don’t always go after the most expensive or the name brand. Simply buy the sunscreen with the highest SPF.
Step two: Fireworks! Yes we all, I included love a good light show, but not if a child’s arm is on fire. Fireworks should be left to the professionals, or the responsible adults at your gathering. Sparklers seem harmless, but are extremely dangerous if left in a young hand.
Step three: Designate a specific play area! Kids being kids love to run and jump all over the place. Unfortunately where they run and jump can be directly in the area where we are grilling or setting off fireworks. Have an area set up as the “kid’s zone”. This way you can know your kids are safe and they have their own space during the celebrations.
