Drinking Water Can Mean Death For Baby
July 14th 2009 12:09
Did you know that drinking water can cause death in infants? Just like adults can throw off their electrolyte balance to the point of death if too much water is consumed in a short period of time, the same can happen for baby. The trouble is, it takes far more water for an adult to reach this point than a baby.
Babies do need water to live, like every other human being or animal, but the water they need to live is contained in the formula they drink for meals. There is no need to supplement baby's diet with water or juice until they are at least 6 months of age.
But, My Baby is Running a Fever
Even if the baby is running a fever, additional water is not needed in the form of straight water or juice. As a matter of fact, if the baby is suffering from diarrhea with the fever, the juice could make this symptom worse. Instead, the pediatrician may advise the parent to use an electrolyte water supplement like Pedialyte increased fluid intake, or the parent can just add more formula.
